This Royal Worcester "Birds" pattern egg coddler was made between the 1930s to the early 1950s.
They are the standard small size, designed to prepare one egg. The design consists of a song bird catching a dragon fly in one scene and feeding her hungry chick on the reverse.
The Type 7 porcelain and chrome egg coddlers have a backstamp that consists of the word ROYAL above the word WORCESTER above the word ENGLAND with no other lines or symbols. The backstamp is black and is under the glaze. The screw threads are finer-pitched than newer types.
MINT condition with no chips, cracks or wear. Pristine inside and out.
RW no longer produces the standard one egg coddler.

An egg coddler is a porcelain or pottery cup with a lid that is used to prepare a dish called coddled eggs. The eggs are soft-cooked and similar to poached eggs, but the eggs are cooked more slowly than a boiled egg.
The lid is a secure top that either clamps on or screws on the dish/cup. The egg or eggs are broken into the buttered coddler and seasonings of your choice are added. The coddler is then closed with the lid and partially immersed in boiling water for a few minutes. When the eggs are cooked to the desired firmness, the coddler is lifted from the boiling water, the lid removed, and breakfast is served, in a lovely decorated dish.
