Royal Worcester is Britian's oldest continuous manufacturer of porcelain ... it is believed they actually invented the egg coddler in the late nineteenth century. these Cups have screw-on chrome lids with a loop on top designed to lift them out of the boiling water. Egg can be eaten out of the porcelain cup.
While it specifies "coddled eggs" these cups could be used as an Egg Poacher, similar methods.
Very good condition. egg coddler is in excellent condition, near mint, without cracks, nicks, chips or crazing
An egg coddler is a porcelain cup with a lid that is used to prepare coddled eggs. Coddled eggs are very much like poached eggs, except that the egg is cooked inside the coddler. The eggs are broken into the buttered coddler, and seasonings are added, if desired. The coddler is then closed with the lid and partially immersed in boiling water for a few minutes. When the eggs are cooked to the desired firmness, the coddler is lifted from the boiling water, the lid removed, and breakfast is served! Both coddlers are standard size - designed to prepare one egg.
Egg coddlers are often painted or glazed with a design. There are many different patterns and designs, which makes them highly suitable as practical gifts for the kitchen, or for addition to the china collection. Egg coddlers are also very desirable as collectibles.
Royal Worcester is Britain's oldest continuous manufacturer of porcelain and it was here over a century ago that the English tradition began. Manufactured since 1890, egg coddlers were originally made in an earthenware body, but since 1931 coddlers have been produced in fireproof hard porcelain.
Backstamped on the bottom of the porcelain Egg Coddler is the Royal Worcester logo in black ink stating ROYAL WORCESTER PORCELAIN, with the Royal Worcester "W" logo, and MADE IN ENGLAND. Marked from 1990.
